When I started NotForgotten I was building my family tree. I had over 30,000 photos and videos spread across my smartphone, Dropbox, OneDrive, on my family tree account, and yes in my drawers – yet I could never seem to find the one photo or video that really mattered to me, the one that captured the landmark moment or the essence of the story. Worse, some of my favorite photos had became “corrupt” and when I went looking for my wedding video, I was unable to to even access it, because it was on a OLD VIDEO CASETTE tape!!
I was frustrated with the number of obstacles and limitations there are to being able to save stories for the next generation to enjoy.
As an engineer with a passion for innovation and a number of patents to my name I knew there was a better way to save stories.
I co-founded NotForgotten on a simple premise – to keep stories and legacies safe, and make stories discoverable and accessible for future generations to enjoy. I believe that our stories help us all see how we connect to the world, that leaving a legacy shouldn’t cost a fortune, and that by participating in the NotForgotten library we will all contribute to having better understanding of our past.
Today the NotForgotten Library Depository has expanded and documented many thousands of time capsules. We lead the International Time Capsule Society which opened its doors over thirty years ago. Our library is in Princeton and the society is headquartered at Oglethorpe University in Atlanta, Georgia where the Crypt of Civilization, regarded as the original time capsule, was proudly sealed in 1937.

WHAT WILL HAPPEN TO MY TIME CAPSULE IF YOU GO OUT OF BUSINESS
Your time capsule has been transferred into the holdings of the NotForgotten library, which is entirely separate from the commercial company. The trust fund is overseen by archivists and librarians who use the fund to periodically update the technology of your archive and make sure your time capsule is available for the time.
I HAVE A COLLECTION OF ART - HOW DO I PRESERVE IT IN A TIME CAPSULE
There are very limited options to preserving physical items for centuries:
A museum/gallery/library may be willing to take your collection;
- Your family can pass it down and preserve the goods in a particular environment;
- You must make provisions for a trust.
Or there’s another way …..digitalize them in a high quality way. Hire a videographer (Concierge time capsule) and tell the story of your collection whilst filming it and photographing it. By special request the library will consider creating a personal collection for artists / musicians / authors.

WHY WOULDN'T I JUST BURY MY TIME CAPSULE
Buried and home made time capsules have 90% chance of being lost, forgotten, or stolen. Notforgotten has layers and layers of technology designed to prevent this from happening.
I DON'T WANT TO DO A VIDEO STORY FOR MY TIME CAPSULE, CAN I STILL DO A TIME CAPSULE
No problem – plenty of options to get creative here. What about filming a picture and doing a voice recording? Our 300 year capsules allow you to skip video altogether and go straight to uploading documents. Memory boxes are primarily designed for serious storage (think 500 photos)
HOW WILL SOMEONE IN 50 YEARS, 150 YEARS, OR 300 YEARS GET MY TIME CAPSULE?
The library (funded by the Trust) will publish information on its public platform how to request and retrieve a time capsule. You would need to have one of the unique references associated with a time capsule – a GEDCOM UUID, a blockchain hash, a library reference, etc and pay a minor retrieval fee to the library.

There are a number of ways your time capsule can be found:
- Your asset certificate which you added to your will.
- Searching the worlds library records (held in Worldcat)
- Searching family history recrods (places like Ancestry)
- Searching on the blockchain
- Searching in the international time capsule registry
HOW WILL SOMEONE WATCH MY VIDEO IN HUNDREDS OF YEARS TIME
The Digital Preservation Trust is tasked with caring for the tapes and archives. They will update the technology so it can be “read” by whatever technology is relevant at the time – even if its a grain of salt!
IS MY SECRET REALLY SECRET, WILL MY CAPSULE BE PRIVATE
Everything becomes public after 50 years. Otherwise it will remain ‘buried” and inaccessible until the opening date YOU choose
WHAT IS DATA ROT AND HOW IS DATA ROT PREVENTED?
Memories die when photos turn brown, lines streak across videos, photos “corrupt”, videos warp and CDs fail. This is data rot – digital data decays too. Save your photos and videos from corrupting rotting or corroding over time. World-class archiving methods preserve your story and protect your precious memories from data rot. Leave your descendants a treasure trove to cherish safe in climate-controlled vaults, cared for by a Digital Preservation Trust. Technology will be updated and audits performed to ensure your memories are safe.
